The Dartmoor Line

After nearly 50 years, daily passenger rail services to Exeter have returned to Okehampton.

The Dartmoor Line becomes the first line to be reinstated under the Department for Transport’s ‘Restoring your Railway’ initiative.

The route connects Exeter St Davids, Crediton and Okehampton providing a launchpad for visitors to explore Dartmoor and regional links for local commuters.

Around half of services, including at peak times, also carry on to Exeter Central. The reopening of the route is expected to boost local businesses, the tourism sector, and provide greater access to education and work for thousands of people who live locally.

Although there is limited space for bikes on the train, cycle hire is available next door to the station which opens up the whole of Dartmoor for car-free travel and holidays. Many accommodation providers on the moor welcome cyclists and have drying/storage facilities on site, and there are a multitude of cycle routes and trails across Dartmoor – visitdartmoor.co.uk/get-active/cycling-on-dartmoor

With a journey time of approximately 40 minutes between Okehampton and Exeter, the Dartmoor Line will provide great opportunities for work, study and leisure travel.

It takes roughly 15 minutes to walk from the station down to Okehampton town centre, butleave 20 minutes to walk back up! Or you can save your legs by taking the 118 bus.
