Description

Meldon is situated on Dartmoor National Park, approximately 900 feet above sea level, with stunning views over the Okement Valley.

Explore open moorland, dramatic tors and a Scheduled Monument: boasting a special combination of industrial heritage, wildlife and nature trails, Meldon is the perfect location to enjoy a unique day outdoors.

Walking at Meldon

Surrounded by steep-sided banks and dramatic tors, Meldon is a fantastic spot to stretch your legs and engage with the outdoors.

Follow a network of off-road footpaths, bridleways and old tracks across the valley, while drinking in the breathtaking scenery.

Meldon boasts an abundance of wildlife: look out for adders, grass snakes, herons and natural brown trout.

Keen rambler? Walk or cycle the scenic Granite Way, crossing the impressive Meldon Viaduct. Head out on a real adventure and navigate open moorland, and even explore other parts of Dartmoor; take a walk to Black-a-Tor Copse, which is one of only two pockets of ancient woodland remaining on Dartmoor. The other is Wistman’s Wood near Two Bridges. This is a wonderful, atmospheric spot for birdwatching.

Watch the West Okement River flow off the high moor into the reservoir, walk to the summit of High Wilhays – the highest point on Dartmoor – or conquer Yes Tor, Dartmoor’s second highest peak.

Alternatively, take a leisurely stroll through the atmospheric countryside, letting your imagination run free.

Meldon is just 34 minutes from Exeter, and less than 10 minutes from the A30.
